We continuously curate and edit our identity. This concept is called self-construction.

This fascinating process of self-creation means we’re constantly crafting a version of ourselves — our “preferred self.”

We edit our own story, picking and choosing which parts to showcase and which to leave behind or give away.

What we choose to leave out is fascinating.

In his book, On Giving Up, author Adam Phillips calls people who can’t give something up “Tragic Heroes.” They are hard-headed folks who believe that endurance, will and strength are all that it takes to be successful. Giving up is for the weak. The book explores the good and the bad of saying no to some things and not others.
